The famous Greek physician Hippocrates, widely known as the “Father of Medicine” is often quoted as saying “Let food be thy medicine..” and indeed this is more true now than ever before. In today’s world, food often comes in packets or boxes and pharmaceutical drugs have become the first resort of a multi trillion dollar healthcare system. This is not the “food” that Hippocrates talked about. Over the last 75 years it has become increasingly hard to obtain truly “fresh” vegetables or nutrient dense fruits of the kind that Hippocrates talked about. Interestingly the original Greek oath that physicians took, literally translated, said “I will apply dietary and lifestyle measures to help the sick to the best of my ability and judgement. I will protect them from harm and injustice.” In today’s world, a physician is none of the above but often a broker of pharmaceutical drugs. So getting healthy (for the public at large) has become more a question of how to navigate away from the plethora of drugs and surgeries offered and to find a simple source of well being like our ancestors did.

In another text titled “De Ailomento” Hippocrates further says “In food excellent medicine can be found, in food bad medicine can be found.” It appears clear from Hippocrates’ writings that food and lifestyle changes were key factors in obtaining good health. These were also the first tools of treatment for a doctor to use unless it was an acute injury. Similarly he felt “Walking is a natural exercise more so than any other form of physical exercise.” And an “after dinner stroll is very beneficial. It prevents fattening of the stomach”. It is clear that as far back as approximately 400 BC people believed in the immense power of food and exercise in providing health, immunity, nutrition, mobility and a sense of joyful well-being.

Why have these simple practises been lost to us over the centuries? The answer is we have become hypnotised to believe that someone else knows more about our health than we do. Once we empower ourselves we can see what affects our health and how it is being affected daily. This is not to say that every disease can be cured or that it’s not helpful to run to the hospital if you have a broken bone. Yes, for acute care the current medical system is possibly the best there has ever been. Yet for the vast array of chronic illnesses plaguing the world at this current time, some simple life interventions and health coaching can help bring back on track the health of many.

In recent years Dr. Deepak Chopra and Dr. Andrew Weil have highlighted the value of various ancient practises and helped bring them back to the center of the discussion on health. They have also shared what most ancient cultures believed to be the immense power of the mind-body connection and how it is possibly a primary healing modality.

In 1971 the New York Times wrote “For thousands of years Eastern mystics and yogis have demonstrated remarkable control over mind and body, while we Westerners have tended to dismiss them as charlatans when they were buried alive for hours, dropped their pulse to the vanishing point or demonstrated that they could listen during their sleep. However, today in the West a number of prestigious laboratory clinics are training people to control their heart rate, lower blood pressure, change skin temperature, relax cartaro muscles, or produce certain brain waves – to control without drugs cardiac arrhythmias, symptoms of insomnia, migraine, tension headaches etc.” While this was written some 50 years ago it has slowly brought into the limelight a key factor that medical science was missing: the impact of mind on the possible creation or disappearance of disease.

The mind-body connection establishes the inherent relationship between the mind, body, and the environment we live in. The fact that basketball legend Michel Jordan visualized himself making the game-winning shot well before he stepped on the basketball court demonstrates the power of imagination to fuel his confidence, drive and belief in himself.

Adding to this he practiced this 500 times daily on the court at 5 am. The combination of a positive mindset and physical action led him to become the basketball legend that he is. Similarly virtually all Olympic athletes know that a medal is not won on the day of the event. The medal or game or championship is won in the mind over and over and over for months or years before the athlete ever steps on the championship court or field.

Most recently, Dr. S. Lazar, a neuroscientist at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, was one of the first scientists to take the anecdotal claims about the benefits of meditation and mindfulness and test them in brain scans. What she found was extraordinary – that meditating can literally change your brain. The Lazar Lab Home page at Harvard Medical School says “We study the impact of yoga and meditation on various cognitive and behavioral functions. Our results suggest that meditation can produce experience-based structural alterations in the brain. We also found evidence that meditation may slow down age related atrophy of certain areas of the brain.” Also Prof. A. Crum at Stanford said “ It’s essential to recognise that mindsets are not peripheral, but central to health and behavior.” Today more than 40 percent of Americans say they use a meditation practice as a natural way to improve health and reduce stress.

In addition major American corporations, such as Apple, Google, Nike, Sony, McKinsey, Time Warner, Deutsche Bank, HBO, Huffington Post, Facebook etc offer meditation classes to their employees since it increases their productivity.

Also, almost all top tier Medical Schools in the US now have a Mind-Body Program e.g. the Mind Body Lab at Stanford, The Herbert Benson MD course in Mind Body medicine at Harvard and so on.

So while ancient seers and sages knew from centuries that the mind-body connection is a powerful influencer of our health, it is science that is catching up with what was known from aeons ago. It is now understood that yoga and meditation have the ability to positively direct changes in our physiology plus impact our behavioral, spiritual, psychological, social, and expressive approaches.

While pure air and pure water are the first steps towards basic health, the addition of improvements made in diet, sleep patterns, breathing, color, light, movement, spatial flow and sound can all change our genome expression to improve health and well being.
